DAILY: January 9, 2020

Today in the meeting I attend most mornings in an anteroom at our local Episcopal Church here in Hudson, New York, we discussed the topic of “isolation.”  On my walk home afterward I found myself humming to myself Me and My Shadow.  Thus, today’s DAILY … well .. reflection.

The writing credits for this song often claim that  it was written by Al Jolson, Billy Rose, and Dave Dreyer.  Most experts consider Rose the lyricist and Dreyer the composer; Al Jolson was given credit so he could earn more money because of his popularizing the song. In the movie Funny Lady, Billy Rose admits to his wife Fanny Brice that the “shadow” in the song was Nicky Arnstein, Brice’s husband before Rose.
